Prima di diventare nel 2000 Red Dot Design Award, il premio Design Innovation veniva attribuito a progetti e progettisti di eccellenza nel settore del product design. Istituito in Germania nel 1955 da un’associazione che faceva capo alla Krupp per modernizzare i beni di consumo tedeschi (partecipando alla trasformazione dell’immagine di Krupp all’indomani della seconda guerra mondiale), il primo concorso annuale e la prima mostra “Ständige Schau formschöner Industrieerzeugnisse” (“mostra permanente di prodotti industriali dal design accattivante”) venne organizzato nella città di Essen dove ancora oggi viene assegnato il Red Dot una volta all’anno.
Before becoming the Red Dot Design Award in 2000, the Design Innovation Award was given to outstanding projects and designers in the field of product design. Established in Germany in 1955 by an association led by Krupp to modernize German consumer goods (contributing to the transformation of Krupp’s image in the aftermath of World War II), the first annual competition and the first exhibition “Ständige Schau formschöner Industrieerzeugnisse” (“permanent exhibition of attractively designed industrial products”) were organized in the city of Essen, where the Red Dot is still awarded once a year to this day.
